What’s your workout/exercise routine?

My favorite way to train for increased explosive strength is to lift heavy and/or awkward objects for speed. As a former competitive cheerleader in high school and college, I would launch teammates into the air to perform stunts. Post college, I traded people for barbells and focused on Olympic-style weightlifting and functional fitness. Now I focus on explosive weightlifting movements and high intensity bursts to train for pit stops along with slower endurance efforts to prepare my body for long days at the track.

Where is the most amazing place you’ve been? What took you there?

Switzerland! My husband, who is half-Swiss/half-Filipino, and I spent two weeks exploring the country to learn a little more about his family heritage. His grandparents are actually from Thun, where Simona is from!

What motivates you/makes you the happiest?

My four-year-old daughter, Wilder, is a huge motivator for me. It is important to me that she grows up knowing that she can be successful in whatever path she chooses. I know that when she sees female representation in male-dominated arenas, it opens her world to possibilities beyond traditional roles. I also think it is important to show her that, as a mother, life for a woman does not stop after having kids. We can still have dreams, careers, second careers, and major personal accomplishments all while having a happy, balanced family life.
